We made the quick 30 minute trip to Basel, Switzerland with Johanna and Rudi. It is on the Rhine River. We wisely parked outside of the Old Town and had a nice walk up to the Munster (Cathedral).
It was a brighter, less ornate church than the Freiburg Cathedral but very beautiful!
The Swiss and Germans love their stained glass. What’s not to love?
The body (maybe? perhaps just a memorial) to one of the Bishops born in 917. No, that number is not missing a 1 in front.
We admired all the monuments to famous Basel residents, wealthy patrons of the church and past bishops.
There was some excellent carving in red sandstone.
The Swiss flag and flag of the canton (state) of Bern.
We also made a quick trip over to the Rathaus (city hall). We learned that historically Rathaus buildings are “ox-blood red”.
There was painting o’ plenty on the walls of the courtyard in the Rathaus.
The Swiss love their cows even on their light rail.
