Here’s Sue making the three layered carrot cake for my work New Years Day potluck. The cake was professional grade—so good that my coworker Aislinn said I can never leave my job since they’d lose Sue and her baking, too. She said this while she was on a cake-fueled sugar high. Christoph and Sue came to my work for the potluck.
Mike and Judy gave us one of those fancy electric wine bottle openers. On Christmas Day, they watched me break off a corkscrew inside the cork of a bottle of bubbly Italian vino. Let’s watch Sue as if this were an infomercial. After removing the foil with the special cutting tool . . .
She began the electric drilling. . .
And lickety split, the cork was out of the bottle in one piece. Thanks Bergs for the great gift.
Christoph joined us in some New Year, or as they say in Germany, “Sylvester” games of Scrabble. he did very well playing the game in his non-native language. Why Sylvester? I do not know. It’s a German thing.
What could Ravel possibly be seeing outside in the cold and bleak midwinter that would make him climb on the back of the chair?
“Guten Rutsch” means something like “have good things come to you in the next year”.
Here’s the dream: two cozy cats being cozy on a lazy winter afternoon. By the way, these boys are very much into the fireplace. They love it almost as much as Sue does.

And this morning Governor Dayton sent out a decree saying that all public Minnesota schools will be closed on Monday due to the forecasted obscenely cold weather. I heard the high on Monday was supposed to be –18 Fahrenheit (-27.7 degrees Celsius). The last time our governor closed all public schools was in 1996. Sue will be gleeful. Christoph does not attend a public school so maybe he’ll have to bundle up and go to school? Mmm, probably not. He’ll have another day to procrastinate about finishing his homework.
