Is Tailwheel in the City?

Sue keeps finding new tasks to perform with our Galaxy tablet.  It has an unnamed Siri who answers question for you.

When I was in Milwaukee last week we did some tooling around the city looking at old churches.  This is an old Catholic church next to Milwaukee Tech High School.

Naturally, churches never seem to be open during the day during the week except for the St. Josephat Basilica and St. Stanislaus (?), both near 6th and Lincoln.  I did not have my camera in hand when we walked in those two.

Here’s Dad not smiling for the camera.  Do I have to say “smile for the camera”?

In the previous post I posted a picture of Ofay who is from British Guiana in South America all dressed up for the 10 below zero weather a couple of weeks ago.  Here is Tailwheel ensconced in a quilt with no surface of his fur showing—and the weather is 45 degrees today!  I’ve almost sat on him a few times already.

And finally, here is Carl Nigel looking cute for the camera.

Here's my coworker Ofay heading home in the cold.

Tanzania Time

636

I think late January is now known as Tanzania time for us.  Lots of late January dates mark where we were at this time in 2013.  As I count it (MLK weekend is my “"marker”), two years ago today, we worshipped at our partner congregation Ipogoro Lutheran and it was the end of a spectacular week seeing the work of the partnership. From there, we flew north for our safari days and finished at Selian Hospital and Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre.

I talked to a couple of our traveling companions today at church and we reminisced about what amazing experience we had.

Here I am with my buddy Alexander and several friends!

Our retired pastor Gary and his wife Carol spend the winter months in Tanzania helping host visiting groups.  Their blog is linked (to the right) here.  Its entertaining reading about what they are up to.  Gary usually manages to get himself into some funny situation every week!

In addition, I’ve linked a blog written by some U of MN medical staff and students.  Its good reading too.

Winter Ritual

Even though it barely feels like winter, one of our winter rituals has started. Our pal Tailwheel has arrived for his winter vacation. He has made himself at home. Everyone is keeping a close eye on him.

New Technology

IMG_2835

We have a new toy electronic device which was purchased yesterday.  This started because the battery on my laptop has died.  The computer works fine but needs to be plugged in.  That’s fine at home but less-than-convenient when not at home.

Even though she is a self-described Mac loyalist, the nice 17 year old girl at Best Buy advised us toward the Samsung Galaxy 4 Tab because it has more apps.  So we went with it.

We can basically do anything on it that we can do on our laptops.  We decided to go with a wi-fi only device (as opposed to one that needs a data plan through a cell carrier) because most places we want to use it are wi-fi equipped.  To prove that point, I watched an episode of “Friends” at the gym today using their wi-fi signal and the Comcast “on demand” app.  No more “Old Man TV” for me!

The cats and I will watch the game this afternoon.

It’s the black cat’s turn to wear the bandana but he doesn’t seem interested in sticking around downstairs to watch the game.  Nigel has settled onto the couch, ready for the game a nap.

Slow News Day

Mary the Cheetah has moved to the window nook and has apparently become a Vikings fan.

Here I am working on my extreme close up selfie shots.

Can you see the ring on my upper lip from playing the trombone?  Tonight Sue and I are attending my 15 year Fairview longevity dinner at the Hilton in downtown Minneapolis.  I worked as a nursing aide for 3.5 years, a cardiology nurse for 5.5 years and now an ICU nurse for 6 years—all for Fairview and all in the same building!  We ordered the vegetarian meal.  Tofu or eggplant parmesan?
