Home of Grunau

OK, these are photos from the beginning of our trip when we stopped at the Grunau’s house on our way to Esslingen. Johanna, Christoph and their mother Elisabeth met us at the French exit door of the Basel Flughafen. Johanna rode with us in our Peugot rental car through the corner of France to the Grunau house in Neuenberg am Rhein.  Here I introduce my new Party Photo technique in which everyone at the table takes a photo of the three people on his or her left and then passes the camera to the right. Fun for all.

Sue and I were pretty jet-lagged at this point so we stayed only about an hour before pressing on to Esslingen.

Christoph is 15 and his older sister Johanna is now 17.

And here’s older sister Katharina who was in St. Paul the year Makiko lived with us. She’s studying chemistry at the University in Freiburg.

We attempted to drive the two or three hours to Esslingen that afternoon but soon wised up and realized we could not stay awake in the stop and go rush hour traffic on the Autobahn. We got a room in a small town near Baden Baden to get some sleep. On Friday Morning we finished the trip to Esslingen.

By the way, yesterday I mentioned in the blog title that “Johanna was here” but almost every time we asked her if she remembered the sites we were seeing, she said she did not remember being there. Elisabeth would confirm that yes, Johanna had been here before!

Today we will go to Christoph’s soccer match in a neighboring town. Again the weather is beautiful—we’re having a great vacation!
