The weather was perfect for our “Big Hike” day. We drove to Grindelwald and bought tickets for the cable car that would take us to the Mannlichen station.
Some of us thought the 30 minute ride was fun while others were sure this is how we would die. Actually, it wasn’t as bad as other times we’ve taken a cable car. At least once I remarked that we probably wouldn’t die if it derailed because we were following the incline of the mountain instead of going straight up.
It was well worth the ride!
We did a short hike up the UNESCO trail and then started on the 1 hour, 30 minute hike to Kleine Scheidegg. Sounds ambitious but it was downhill the entire way!
The travel books said we would not be alone on the hikes and it was true. There were impressive groups of tourists scattered all over the mountains.
We asked a young Chinese tourist to take our picture and she did a nice photo shoot for us with plenty of angles. I know she was Chinese because I said “would you take our picture?” in Japanese and she answered “I’m Chinese” in English. Oops…
Just another fabulous view from the hike
Looking way, way down at Lauterbrunnen.
It did not look as ominous when we were there but the clouds rolled right through during most of our time on the mountain.
This is a restaurant and lodge. Nice views!
There were lots of tourists who spoke Japanese. I think this woman must have purchased everything in the “Mountain Climber” catalog. She was decked out!
The mountains looked mean enough to bite.
We were several mountains away from this glacier. There were many, many helicopter tours that got people this close, though.
Back on the ground in Grindelwald Grund – there were villages upon villages of “Duke Houses”.
